Flourishing Looks Different for Every Child

St. Michael's Girls' Football Team - Joint league Winners
At St Michael’s CofE Primary Academy, we believe that every child is precious and unique, with gifts, talents and possibilities waiting to flourish.
Our vision is rooted in the promise of Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you … plans to give you hope and a future.” That sense of hope sits at the heart of school life. Through a happy, loving and nurturing community, an inspiring and enriched curriculum and a deep commitment to inclusion, we want every pupil to grow in confidence, develop a thirst for knowledge and discover what they are capable of achieving.
And flourishing does not look the same for every child.
This year, our two football teams have shown what can happen when children are given the opportunity to belong, participate and succeed. The journey of our girls’ team has been particularly special. Some had previously struggled with friendships, but football gave them a shared purpose. They began to bond, encourage one another and grow in confidence.
Many had never played football before, yet they went on to finish runners-up and joint top of the Wolverhampton League. Their achievements have inspired other pupils, with new Year 6 children asking to form their own girls’ team. Several of last year’s players have also joined local community teams, with one pupil going on to represent the district.
Our pupils in the Ark have also experienced a remarkable year of growth and opportunity. Two pupils took part in the whole-school residential, embracing the challenge of being away from familiar routines, an important milestone in their developing confidence and independence.
Our Ark Year 6 pupils made us equally proud, with several completing their SATs and achieving fantastic results. But their successes have extended far beyond the classroom. Pupils have represented the Ark in a table cricket competition, visited the swimming pool, post office and HugglePets, taken part in community litter picking and embraced Sports Day with determination and encouragement for one another.
They have also participated confidently in church services, strengthening their sense of belonging as valued members of the wider school family. Each experience has helped pupils develop independence, understand the world around them and recognise their own strengths.
As we reflect on these achievements, we are reminded that success is about so much more than results.
For one child, flourishing might mean achieving an excellent academic outcome. For another, it might be finding a friendship, joining a team, spending a night away from home, becoming more independent, discovering a new talent or simply having the confidence to try something they once thought was beyond them.
What unites these stories is the determination of our pupils and the unwavering support of staff, families and our wider community.
At St Michael’s, we want every child to leave us with more than knowledge. We want them to leave with confidence, hope, aspiration and a belief in what might be possible for their future.
Because when children are given the right opportunities, encouragement and support, they can flourish in ways that are entirely their own.
